TEXAS
For the last three years, I haven't been able to keep anything with my TX Cichlid because it killed everything. Last night I cought this little spotted gar in the Nueces river. I don't think the TX cichlid will bother him too much, we'll see.

my oscar killed both my gars.
i had 2 needle nose gars and they were eating there daily feeders
and my oscar went to snatch one from one of the gars
and bit his bottom jaw and i guess that was good enough to break his back
and in the morning one of my gars was all mangled up, he was still alive
but his back was at like a 35 degree angle lol, he tried to swim and regain
straightness but it was just to hard, soo he just continued into the current
going around and around the tank.

the next day i fed another pair of feeders to my last gar and the oscar came from no where
and bit the gars bottom jaw yet again and took his feeder.
this gar died immediatly though soo i took him out and wrapped him in a bag and tossed him in the garbage.
i feel bad for not having expierence with gars yet and putting them in the same tank
with cichlids, i should have put them in a 40 gallon by themselves.
the gars and my sa ca's lived together for about 4 months.

i hope your texas does not kill your gar.

Sounds like you're referring to needle fish, which are not a true gar. They lack the "armor" that our american gar have, and stay very small in comparison at about 1' (among other differences). Not saying this will be a perfect match, but the gar will stand a much better chance in this case. How big is he?

they were both about 8", starting to get fat.
it was pretty hard to watch that happen though lol.
i wish i had more expierence with that fish before
accepting them into my tank.

good expierence though, i know not to put needle nose in with my cichlids again lol.
it was pretty cool watching them eat feeders though lol.
they would go for like 3 at a time sometimes.
and you could like see the fish in their throats lol.

for now i'll continue gaining expierence in the cichlid world
before i get into monster gars, like yourself.

If you're asking about my gar, he's about 15 inches eating bait fish (shiners) from the bait shop. I can't imagine a cichlid breaking his jaw, they're tough as nails. Heck, the Indians used to use gar scales as arrowheads. The TX has pecked at him a couple of times since his arrival but for the most part leaves him alone; a first for my TX. He's killed EVERYTHING else.

where did you catch him at? is your texas wild as well?
Both are wild caught. I got the Texas Cichlid seen here:

in Brackettville, TX and I caught the gar in the quickly drying Nueces River. If you're in the area, there are pockets (puddles) everywhere near Uvalde with little gar, catfish, cichlids, sunfish, et al. in them. If they aren't taken out, they'll be bitting the dust very soon.

That is an amazing texas! One of the best i think i've ever seen. Do most of the wild caughts look similar to that?
