So with the heavy load (im my opinion) on my 55gal, I've constantly had issues with green and brown algae. I run heavy lighting, and also keep a lot of fish in it, so I understand where it comes from, just been trying to figure out a way to help me combat it. I recently started working at a LFS, and through my customers, I acquired a Coralife 9w 3 twist sterilizer for $20..I couldn't pass it off. I already had a power head and left over tubing at home so I came in WAY ahead of any other route I had previously been looking at as far as purchasing new or used. So about 4-5days ago I cleaned the tank extremely well, set up the sterilizer, and let it go.. the first video is the setup, and the second will be the follow up I just did tonight.

From personal experience, I can to tell you that the UV sterilizer will help with a green water problem, but won't help with brown algae. From my reading, high phosphates (and some say nitrates) can contribute to a brown algae problem.

brown algea comes from high phosphates and high nitrates yes, you also usually see brown algea in a new setup for the first 6 months say ?

i also thought bout trying one for mine since i have a problem with brown algea as well and its a real PITA !! lemme know if it helps with your brown algea problem tho if it does i'll likely try one lol there just expensive up here i canada
