Hi all

Finally got my wolf fish, actually got three they are around 6", they have settled in nicely, fed them some prawns yesterday they ate them without a problem, i have them in the tank with 2 golden giant gouramis they are around 4", they also ate the prawns aswell as some pellet food greedy fish :naughty:, all is well in the tank at the moment the wolf fish ignore the gouramis, the only thing i have notied that there is one wolf weaker then the other well it gets pushed around a bit, no damage yet will watch carefully.

I am thinking of adding a clown knife and silver arrowanna and then finally some barracuda once Dan gets them in, wot do you lot think a good mixture? anyone suggest adding something different?

Will post pics once i get the camera from my bro.

Which Wolves have you got, If its the bigger guys there will be trouble. Barracuda are easy targets and very skittish. Keeping them with any fish that may chase them is not a good idea. They are known as head smashers and will be constantly smashing into the sides of the tank.

kane, I have to say no on the barracudas and the silver aro for these reasons.

Barracudas are FAR too fragile to live with a wolf. To be honest, they are too fragile to even end up living with a Giant Gourami.

They are amazing fish, I had a pair of altus, but they are pure predators, not fighters. They don't fight back when attacked, and they can't take much punishment.

Mine even got bashed up a bit from some juvie pbass. A couple of hits from a wolf and they would be gonners. As they are shiny midwater swimmers, they'd be an attractive target for the wolves too.

As far as the silver, they grow so fast and get big. Unless you have a solid plan to upgrade to say a 6 x 2 x 2 within 6 months or so, I would choose something else.

I got a beautiful silver from SA just a few months ago at 9 inches, it's now 16 inches. It's grown faster than any other fish I've had, including snakeheads. It's grown over twice as fast as my cobra snakehead.

One other thing is silvers although big, are usually placid and fragile, and would present a similar easy target to the wolves that the barracudas would.

The silver would have to be say twice the size of the wolves for it to work. You'd have to get a beefy foot long silver now, and hope it was fairly aggressive :)

thanx thumbsup:

So is back to square one, people i need mid swimmers and top swimmers if possible attarctive ones, can you please reccomend some? and do you think i should go for any more ground dewellers?

If you're prepared to upgrade this tank in a year or so, get a couple of bichirs, but tough bichirs that can defend themselves - endlicheris. They get big, 2/3 foot, but the ones I've had have not been that quick growing. If you get them at around 8 inches they should last a year in your tank. And also a couple of dorados, ask wildwoods if they have any in.

A dorado is a hyper active, fast, aggressive midwater swimmer, that looks like a sort of demonic trout or salmon.

They can give a wolf a run for their money, no problem.

Thing is though, endi and dorados are both gonna out grow your tank, so only get them if you're prepared to upgrade. The difference is, they don;'t grow as fast as a silver aro, and are nowhere NEAR as fragile as a freshwater cuda or a silver.

I can think of fish that would be fine without upgrading, but they are boring, like tinfoil bars, bala sharks, pinktail chalceus etc. They are all active shoaling fish that can take a beating, they could end up as snacks for the wolves, but they are cheap and common at least :)

Congrats on the pickups. I'm sure you'll love the wolves.

thnx people

the wolves are starting to get aggressive towards each other at feeding time but still no damage i shall just keep up the feeding and hope they are never hungry. The giant gouramis are livung in harmony with the wolves, the wolves dont seem to pay any attention to them.

The lfs has two albino clown knives they are 3 to 4inch i think will go for these, and wot do people think about oscars wit the wolves???

Today i have added two new fish, gold severum and some fish called the head stander will get scientific name for you so far so good, the wolf fish did take notice of the head stander when i first put it in but now all is wel so far.
