Menifee, socal
THIS MAY OR MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU AND I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ACCIDENTS.

I have been having problems with the noise coming from my 2 inch overflow namely the gurgling sound and I tried all sorts of things to try and quiten it. We had a part from a sprinkler valve picture below its the black piece on the right. For people who know sprinkler systems it is the piece which water comes out of when the sprinklers turn off it releases the excess water.

Anyway took everything from inside this piece and we drilled three or four holes into the side of it and a hole in the top. We put a drinking straw into the top hole to let the air out of the overflow when it is installed so it alows the water to flow in through the lower holes. We then put the piece on top of the overflow and it allowed the water to come just above the ridge marked on the picture this made sure no air was getting sucked in and the straw let what ever air was in the system out so there was no gurgleing.

I also installed a some extra pipe work where the overflow runs into the sump to create a small back pressure.

Doing this did quiten my overflow alot my airpump now makes more noise than my overflow now.

It did take some time getting my water level right as the number of holes drilled into the top piece depends on how much the return pump pushes out.

Pretty cool.
I think putting that “back pressure” on your drain line did the most to quiet down your rig.
Pretty clever parts idea for your gurgle buster, most just cob things together.
Seen everything from spray paint caps to modded PVC fittings.
Pretty dramatic change when the system goes quiet, eh.

Venting the overflow is a good idea. I have also heard of folks using a large foam prefilter crammed over the intake. This reminds me of the ungodly gurgling that my 300's overflows made when it was up and running...

We only had a couple of inches spare and we only just had enough room to get the cap on, the difference was amazing we can actually sleep at night (tank is in dining room).

I just thought I would share what we did maybe it will help someone of give them ideas on what they can try.
