For years I had a 55g with an emperor 400 and every week I would do my wc and leave the filter run until it lost its suction that way I would filter any debris stirred up while cleaning. In the spring I upgraded to a 125g with 2 fluval 405s and stopped using this technique since the returns would spray water everywhere, today I found the solution. Remove the bottom piece of plastic from the return nozzle this way the water shoots straight down and doesn't make a mess and I no longer have to shut off my filters or in-line heaters.
