Well after seeing all the awesome fish tanks on this site Im starting a search for a larger one. Ive heard a easy and effective way to find free tanks is to walk around the dorms of colleges between semesters and pick them up. Apparently student buy huge or somewhat large tanks without thinking much and when the year ends they have no way to transport the tanks saftly. So they give away the fish and toss the tanks behind dorms or by the street. Have any of you had luck finding them this way, seems a little to good to be true. Any other ways of finding free or cheap tanks besides craigslists.

drive thru neighborhoods on trash pickup day in the morning before the trash truck comes, you would be surprised what people throw away. i have picked up atleast 3 or 4 tanks this way, nothing too big, 55g and smaller.

Cool, how often do you have to do this. I may try doing this when I get a chance.

well it dose take a while, i use to read water meters so i was out every morning driving in neighborhoods thats how i pick them up. but it would prob be cheaper to just pick up a few off craigslist because you would prob spend alot on gas, and also be time consuming

Check your local freecycle.org as well.
Its about being in the right place at the right time.garage sales, bulk trash pickup days estate auctions, local charities where people dump junk, whatever. If you keep at it you will find tanks.cheap or free.its how I got most of mine.
