Have flowerhorns impacted your ability to find "pure" stock of cichlids?

If yes - what species and describe how (what source) you used to find "pure" stock.

If no, what other (than flowerhorns) challenges have you found to finding pure stock?

I never realized that this was such an incendiary topic. If you don't have something constructive to say, please don't post :)

Thanks,
Matt

I would probably be apprehensive about buying a trimac from a LFS, but there's no need since Ken Davis lives an hour away. :)

Well... You suck! LOL JK!!!

I have found the Vieja Synspila to be pretty easily hybridized (can I use this word here??) which obviously makes it harder to find them in local pet stores. Same with Citrinellus and Libiatus. (spelled wrong, I know)

I lately have seen some Convicts twisted somehow too!

My fix for these?? Find a reputable supplier. Many, many MFKers know whom to buy from! They will be more then happy to give you propper links. I have a supplier that is about 1 1/2 hours away and can usually get anything!!

Lately I've been wanting f0 and f1 only....:screwy:

Has it lessened my ability to find pure stock? No. I can use the internet. Has it increased the time and cost of locating said pure stock and restricted it to those that know what suppliers/importers carry stock that can be trusted? Definitely. I'd love a trimac, but I'm not buying one here locally as they're all low grade flowerhorn being sold as three spot cichlid or trimacs and I'm not shelling out an extra $120 for a box from the east coast.

The problem isn't finding pure stock, pure fish are out there. It's the people that aren't educated enough to realize that the fish they're buying isn't a valid species and is a hybrid. Just look at the mess that is Paratheraps and Amphilophus in the LFS.

The answer to all the questions you've posted boils down to the same thing again and again, education.

yes, but i dont believe its the flowerhorns fault, its the idiots that deal with flowerhorns fault

All depends on who you buy it from, from a pet store, most likely not pure, especially Amphilophus species. Buy from me, Rapps, Tiny, ect and you get what you want. Xia, how many F1 Citranellum do you want? :D Ken

How is a flowerhorn owner at fault of a mislabled fish?
What if a red devil is a midas, or a mutt of the two? Is that the flowerhorn owners fault? What about an accidental hybrid sold as a pure fish, are flowerhorn owners to blame for that as well? I can totally see how a flowerhorn has made finding a pure trimac a bit more difficult since that's what they're believed to be based off of, but for everything else.....I think it's a stretch.

My theory is it's not the flowerhorn's or the owners fault, they're just getting blamed for it.
Also, what makes you think I'm an idiot?:)
