I used to have an ehiem classic 2217 on my 75. The canister was a beast. I'd throw a bag of purigen in it and when I cleaned it, I could tell the water had been pulled right through it. I'd cut some nice polishing pads for it everything was great.

Years later I'm running four smaller tanks rather than a larger one. I bought two sicce whale 120's. It comes with a really course foam and a still kind of course foam. I'd like somthing finer. Normally I'd just stuff some filter floss in. I was just browsing Amazon though and was looking through all the pond filter pad sets and aqurium foam pad rolls. Is it any better than poly filter floss? Does any one custom cut there own foam for their canister?

Side note but not as important as I have other placement options. It is very obvious that when I place purigen in the sicce whale the the water just flows around it. Any opinions on that would also be appreciated.

Thanks folks!

It makes my blood boil when you see all these tiny little pieces of replacement cut sponge and foam at LFS's which are meant to be designed for X,Y,Z filters. The prices are nothing short of scandalous.

The best fine polishing media ime is without doubt filter floss. The filter floss I get isn't even sold for aquarium use, it is the insides of pillows!!! I buy a couple of smart price cheap pillows every couple of months and they are perfect for my needs.

You can tear off as much as you need and just replace it once in a while. It depends on your system how often you need to replace it, but you do need to keep on top of it. Filter floss collects all sizes of crud and can block quite quickly. You'll start getting blockages, by-pass and overflow issues if your husbandry slips.

If filter floss is too fine for you you can also buy large pads of poret foam, which come in various ppi grades, and cut them down to size to so they fit your filter.

My advice is to do any, or both of the above, but for god's sake don't buy those ready cut pads from the shops.

Agreed. My uncle back in the day owned a furniture upholstery shop and he would have massive amounts of polyester padding around all the time. It was the cheapest part of his buisness. I'm not sure what he paid for a 20 x 300 foot roll of it but probably about as much as a fluval pad form the LFS.
