I have a 9" Fire Eel in a tank by himself, and I'm wondering if the sand substrate I'm using is ok for him. The LFS had smooth rocks, but the sand that I'm using is fine "sugar" sand, so it shouldn't be too rough on him. Any advice or suggestions you have would be great.

another question... How long before he grows out of his 55g tank. He doesn't share it with anyone, but I know he will need a bigger one before he's full grown. Any suggestions?

sounds like the sand is okay, just keep an eye on it. if it is considered safe for FW rays then it is safe for fire eels. at 9" he'll grow fairly quick until hitting 14-18" ime. I wouldn't say to run out and get a new tank now.. but I would be shopping around. Liekly by mid-summer he will outgrow the 55. I made teh mistake of upgradeing to a 75.. which was quickly outgrown. I would look inot a 120W or a 180 if I could do it over. This ought to hold him for a few more years. atm mine are 2yrs old and approx 24" .. other members have 4 yr olds that are approx 36"... so these guys will grow fast and steady it seems, and though slow down.. not by a whole lot.
