finished drift wood safe??

A relative of mine brought me over a piece of driftwood for my aquarium, however it looks like it may possibly be finished with some sort of clear coat.. curious if it'd be safe to put it in my tank if it is indeed finished.. thoughts?

That's a tricky one, varnish certainly could be toxic. Let it soak in the tub for awhile, see if any chems leach into the water. There should be a film on the top plus you'll notice an odor.

You could always seal it up with resin thats fishy safe. Probably have to sand it to get it to stick though
 
Yep, I soaked it in water earlier and looked to see if any film showed up on the water's surface.. None! no odor either. I'm pretty sure it's fine, just the way the wood looks. Got it set up in my tank as we speak, looks great!
