I was looking at a firebelly newt/salamander. dose anyone have any??? i was thinking of getting one for my 10 gallon(with floresent lights). i hear that they have bad eye site and that they really don't compete for food very well(which is good). i have 3 agazzizzies Corry cats, about 3-4 guppies and 6 cardinal tetras, i keep the tank filled about 3/4 - 5/8th the way filled so the splashing of the water from the bio-wheel oxygenates the water a bit, i had it full and the fish where all gasping. this leaves one of the pieces of driftwood sticking out of the water about and inch, so it would be kind of perfect but i would like to get someones opinion on it...since if i ask the guys at the store, they will be like, duhhh, a newt? yah we have dose, it for da watter right...:nilly: :grinno:

thanks

i think they eat small fish..as well as bloodworms..keep a tight lid also on the tank cause they like to climp up the hoses and escape...temp. must also be right cause they could die if left in a extremely hot or extremely cold env..but i'm no expert this is just what i remember cause i had 4 of these last year but is sold them on account that i needed their tank for my juvy fronts..they're really fun to watch and that driftwood would be allright cause they need to breathe above water, but they also need a place to bask in above water:)

the tank right now is kept at 80*F, there is a top on it and i might just get some floating bark if i do decide to get one, is one better then two? or is two better then one? should i get males or females?

my cardinals and guppies are all around 1"+

My son has a paddle-tailed newt, it loves to eat bloodworms. This summer were are planning on putting a tank together to house it and possibly a couple of others if we can find some. We found this on at a
Pets Supplies Plus" in Finley,Ohio which is a 4 hour trip from my home (Not a problem, I was in Dunkirk to set-up a salt tank for my brother).

i would also get then one of those little turtle island things that stick on the side of the tank and float. u wanna make sure they have room to get on it. well depending on how big the drift wood is outta the water. sounds like a good idea, i feed mine bloodworms, and ya they will escape so make sure they cant lol

whats that really big salamander.

yeah i have one in a 5gal right now.i have a whisper filter inn there that output to the top of a perfectly shaped rock to make a waterfall. so O2 not a problem in my tank.
i do find that they don't fair as well in deeper tanks, they need to crawl out the water, not climb. so a sloping shore is better than a floating island.
i feed mine premade newt/frog pellets, just drop a few in front of him and he finds em pretty quick.i used to (when we first got him and he was really skinny, now he's fat as hell) hand feed him guppies. id fish one out of the tank and run it under really hot water for a second or two (kills em pretty quick, cooks them a little too) and then just stick it in the water and he'd come and get it. he'd also eat little peices of hot dog too. but i stopped that cause i didn't think it was good for him.
what you can do about him eating your guppies is put some feeders in there (ones you won't mind parting with) they'll set up breedingand hell eat mostly the young instead of the adults. i never see any young but always a pregnant female, so i'd say this works.
GL redbellies are a blast

hehe, i have that pregnet female is always pregnet and there is never any fry problem too... but i have had enough id breeding the guppies, the cardinals i have in there are about 1" big right now and everynow and then i see a wiggling tail sticking out of the tetras mouth... and the corries just sift through the sand, they never touch the wafers i toss in there everynow and then.

the lod that stands out of the water is about 3"X2" at the top and it usly sticks out about an inch. i liked the look of the fire bellies for a long time and i think I'll get one this week sometime, I'll post a pic when i do. also do they eat algea at all? i have some brown bush algea growing on the two pieces of drift wood.
