I've got about an 8-9inch fire eel in my 5ft 120gallon tank, currently with a group of Malawi cichlids that are goin the the Lfs for credit on some more compatable tank mates for the eel.
I'm curious as to how long it will take before he is a nice 25-30" at present he ain't eating much partly I believe to be because the cichlids dnt give him a chance but once they are gone I won't be adding any new fish until he is eating well.
I know it depends on tank size filteration diet and everything but I'm after a rough figure? Can anyone give me an idea?

They usually reach 30" at around 3 years old, but your going to need a larger tank before it gets to that size.

When I moved mine from my 5th Malawi tank to my 300 gal ray tank he just took off...I put this down to being more relaxed as the malawis are so aggressive, the larger volume and the massive reduction in nitrate which I think eels struggle with...the malawis were always around 100ppm of nitrate, the rays are less than 20ppm

Also keep trying larger foods, you will be surprised what they can cram in...lance fish /whole fish is so much better than things like small krill or bloodworm.

That was definitely your problem. 100ppm of nitrate is toxic enough to cause serious stunting after longterm exposure (and not just for spinies). You're going to need to fix that ASAP, or your Malawi's won't last very long.
