In my last post I had said my Fire eel was not eating but was still as active as normal, well today he was in his cave upside down but moved when I tried to touch him, He did show a little interest when I put in some Mosquito lava but has now just lay under a rock. I redone my water tests and all came back normal apart from my Ph was 6, I did a 25% water change and added alittle Ph up and will do the same again in the morning. I have had a DIY CO2 system running but have taken it out thinking the co2 drove the ph down. Any ideas as this is only the second Fire Eel I have kept and my last one died after having it only a month. I normaly do 2 x 25% water changes a week and every third week I will do a 50%. He is in 400L tank with a few Danios, Minnows, Barbs and SAEs so he is not being bullied as he is by far the biggest in the tank. I would hate to kill another Fie eel as they are very cool fish.

This could be why......

Has he been wormed since you've owned him? Most fire eels if not all are wild caught. Internal parasites seem to be very common in these fish. people on here pretty regulalry seem to have issues after owning them a few monthes with unknown illness that suddenly kills their eels.. I delt with this myself when I first got mine. and another member reccomended worming.... It did the job. It is also possible the fish is constipated. imo either way worming your eel at this point is likely to do more good then bad. I generally use prazipro. Not sure whats available to you in new zealand. PH buffers ect are not a good idea. your better off with stable PH then fluctuating PH. I've always had hard water so in reguards to my eels they where stable.. The only times I've had issues is sudden PH swings. Water changes and fire eels are very important ime as well for some reason they are extra sensitive I think to dissolved organics in the water. 25% 2x a week sounds like a good water chaange schedule just make sure not to skip it.. and if you have to skip one.. make sure you do 50% the next time around. I would also avoid the CO2.. particulalry DYI. What do you normally keep your nitrate range in? and what where your KH/GH? not just your PH.
