Fire Eel Questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I highly, highly doubt it.

And I really think you should go for the fire eel if you have a 150. The chances that you'll end up needing a bigger tank than that are slim. But others with more experience may disagree.

a fire eel is less likely to go after fish then a tire track is.. that one I know for sure. a well fed happy fire eel = one less likely to eat other fish. my 3 fires ignore the rosy red minnows in the tank that my oscar and needlenose eat. my TT eats guppies,mollies,platies... anythign i throw in there.

Yeah I see people put them in 55s and 75s a lot - ok so it has been stated that they can get up to 36", but what is the average length of one?

My LFS has a nice fire eel for $12 (about 4-5 inches long) - I resisted temptation because the 150 is the biggest tank I will have for the next 5 years.

Would a full grown fire eel find a fish that was around the 3-4 inch mark a snack?

yes but if he with fish in your lfs he should be fine. my fire eel has been with a 4" fish and been fine just make sure u have hideing place for the eel.

Pulled the trigger on the eel, he is now hanging out in my tank under some driftwood. He didn't go for the frozen brine shrimp I offered tonight, will try some blood worms tomorrow!

i have a 12" fire eel in my 90g and he LOVES it...i will upgrade when he grows bigger but that wont be for a while...mine LOVES LOVES LOVES ghost shrimp and eats them straight out of my hand...i advise that for initial feeding...you can easily feed them those by hand

He/She is a cool little eel. For the first few hours it didn't move from its spot under a piece of large driftwood, but for the past hour or so it has been exploring its new home and playing with the koralia I have on this tank.

I think it's just glad to be out of its last home - was in a 20g for a month with large gravel for a substrate - I have sand...he/she is loving it. And I'm having a blast watching it swim around.

Don't have a camera and my blackberry takes really crappy pics.

Tried the bloodworms - no go. What else might the little guy like?
