Hey everyone, I have a fire eel elver now. He has been in my 20long for about a month and a half now and isn't growing very much despite his voracious eating habits. To deal with this, I've decided to put him into his new home, my 55, so that he can grow out. Right now there is only a pair of adult firemouths in there. I was wondering if, at around 6 or 7", he would be alright in there. The firemouths do spawn but they arent generally very aggressive and keep to their own side of the tank. He will have a pretty substantial hiding tube as well. What are your thoughts/experiences?

thanks

Just so you know, your fire eel needs a tank MUCH LARGER than a 55G, more along the lines of a 180... considering these guys do grow past 3feet long and FAT...

If your tank set-up is accurate... the crayfish, and turtles pose a far larger threat then the firemouths.

and of course what Fat Homer said :iagree:

as for the bigger tank, yes I know lol. I wouldn't buy a fire eel without being prepared to get him a giant home. The 55 is just a grow out for the time being. And the turtles are in a seperate pond. It is only the firemouths in the 55 now (sadly the yabbie jumped ship a couple of months ago; found her under my bed). I just havent gotten around to editing my tank setups :-p

lol, I'de say if the cichlids generally aren't aggressive they should be fine. I had mine w/ an Oscar for quite awhile(Oscar got big enough that more precautionary then anything else I chose to move him, and he was picking at mine abit anyway) TBH though if your fires are breeding.. I wouldn't put it past the fire to potentially eat the fry/eggs. PVC tube or other hide spot for the fire that the firemouths can't get into will also go a long way for peace of mind.
