i just bought my first fire eel today from the lfs for $20 at about 10 inches. my tank is barebottom and has some driftwood in there. there is not to many hiding spots, will that make the fire eel more prone to jumping out? also what do fire eels eat? can they handle smelt thanks

i would get some pvc tubeing and some frozen blood worm or krill.

PVC is a great hide spot, more driftwood also works. Try earthworms, and frozen foods.. most don't take to fish until they get bigger. Mine will still only eat earthworms and the occasional sinking pellet.

yeah i got pvc but i dont wanna put it in because i dont want the fire eel to be a hiding whore lol. it sucks for him i dont have bloodworms so hes gonna have to eat shrimp. does anyones eat carnivore pellets>

more hide spots = less stressed fish = fish out and about more .. my 3 come out mid-day and have tons of hiding spots, they feels safe in their tank. quite hilarious to see 'em spook and the tank go nuts.. as they dash to their hiding spots I must admit. GL starving it onto shrimp.. they are very stubborn and will starve themselves to death on occasion. I wish you luck, but I have a feeling it'll be another "My fire eels died.." :( not trying to be rude.. but honest.
