Hello, I just got a 55 gallon tank. I am currently looking for freshwater fish to put in it, and was wondering about a few different fish. I am interested in Fire Eels, and Bichir eels. I would prefer a fire eel, and 2 bichirs... Is that to much for the size tank I have? If so, then my next choice would be Red Belly Piranah, Arowana, Oscars, or possibly a Clown knife fish. Bottom line is - I want a very unique tank with exotic fish. I searched for fish, and listed every fish I thought was neat.. And wrote them all down. I came down to the ones I listed. Please list the combinations of the fish I listed that could go together including the amount of each fish I could have in the 55 gallon tank I have.

(Also, any suggestions on fish would be greatly appreciated!)

~ Thanks.

The list below is not a list of combined fish in a 55gal just fish that can live in a 55 gal

Fire Eel - yes
Bichir - yes
Red Belly Piranha - one could but it is not a good idea due to the fact they are a schooling fish
Arowana - No waaay to big
Oscar - no grows to be very large
Clown Knife - no, again grows to large

honestly get a fire eel and a senegal bichir(maybe 2) thats if you have good filtration.

A 55 really isn't all that big. I hate to say that, but its true. Most South American fish will grow to large for it. It is only 12" deep, so large fish have trouble turning around.

2 Angelfish would look nice. Tiretrack eels, peacock eels, those would be fine in a 55g.

A fire eel or tire track eel will definitely NOT work in a 55G long term... Juvie yes, but adult definitely not...

Sorry to break it to you but fire eels when fully grown will reach up to 3ft plus and can grow as thick as a mans arm...

You could however try zig zag eels or peacock eels... They would work in a 55

Yep, zig zag eels, small to medium bichir ( senegal or delhelzi), peacock eels all stay under or around 12". You could start any of the fish you want in the 55 as a grow out tank but should have a larger one ready for them before you need it. I'm in WV as well and know a good LFS if you're near Chas. or Hunt. If you can't get a larger tank now you can always set up a unique bio-type tank. If you like the amazon set it up to look like a cutaway of the river and find some of the smaller species to put in it.
