fire eels

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fire eels are awsome, but they can easily get up to 3' long and will eat, eat, eat! It will be at the front of the tank beggin for food. If it's in with a slower fish, it will eat all the food. Had one for bout 2 yrs. had to re-home him...moved out of state. He went from about 3" to 18" in that time. I'd say it would need at least a 180g in time.

how big do fire eels grow to ?? what does a good diet for them consist of ?? thanks
36" or bigger.. diet: earth worms, krill, live ghost shrimp, shrimp, blood worms. :)

The sticky that Lupin posted a link to is actually around 4" off on the fire eel's maximum size (the sizes given were actually just based on the person's own experience.... and they're also 8" off on the TT eel...).

Tire tracks and fire eels are very comparable in adult size. Fire eels may get a little thicker.
I don't think so, at least not by much. There have been two members here with eels of each species (one had a TT, the other a fire) at around the 40" mark, and both eels looked to be pretty equal in girth from what I could tell.

Females of either get nice and thick.. the males tend to stay smaller and more slender. either way your still talking 24"+ fish which will require approx 180 gallons + fully grown. either species can be challengeing for any keeper.
