The ones i've kept have been extremely fiesty, and by far the most aggressive fish i have kept.
And i have kept many big fish that on paper is far more aggressive.
Granted, mine was a pair of them, and they tag-teamed everyone getting close, even when they weren't breeding or anything.

I have two and they are fine and not agressive at all. Infact they flare their gills (hence the name) instead of attacking. HrHagel must have been agressive due to being a pair.. any cichlid is when paired off!
They are in a tank with two Oscars and there is never any trouble. Infact if you search the internet for Oscar tank mates the firemouth is often a suggestion. They are lovely fish and you won't regret getting them

i would say they arent agressive in the sense that they will go around killing and nipping other cichlids but they are feisty in the sense that they can surely hold there ground against most aggressive cichlids. I have yet to see mine take any crap from oscars twice his size. And my husband had one in his tank forever with much bigger meaner tnak mates and he always new how to fight back.
generally, they are "fake tough guys", they will flare up and all, but will generally can't deal with more aggressive fish that won't back down to them
Aparently you want something similar to an oscar. How about a Red devil ( 75g ) green terror ( 55g) or Flowerhorn ( 75g )
Mine is probably the most entertaining fish in the house. He's always startin' with my Jag and Salvini - All day long - and the amusing part he's less than half the size of the Jag. The only fish he runs from is the male Festae, he'll lip lock the female festae until the male comes to the rescue. My firemouth also isn't afraid to give cheap shots on any fish.........when the others aren't lookin' the FM will give'm a nip then run. The FM makes a relativley boring tank amusing. I hope he can survive in this tank a good long time. He seems to be the only fish in the tank the male Festae dosen't chase after with a vengence.
I have a firemouth in with en electic blue jack dempsey and an oscar...very peaceful fish imo. I have only see him flare his gils, and thats it. (looks pretty cool)
