I have a Firemouth in a 90g tank with about 5 silver dollars and he is chasing the silver dollars. Would increasing the school to 9 minimize the firemouths aggression. Would a firemouth work with a Jupari? Angelfish? Clown Loach?

Another firemouth or two would be a better addition to avert the aggression.

Jurapari require groups to do well, so probably not.

Angelfish would get fin nipped to nubs by the silver dollars.

Clown loaches could do well. Just be sure to get at least 3.

I have a FM in my 90 but the problem I ran into was that I had only 3 fish in there for a couple months and IME this isn't enough to spread the agression. My 2 biggest fish harassed the other etc...

So I'd add more than two, but would also consider adding other species. I have 2 FM, 1 JD, 1 GT, 1Salvini. Works great, nobody gets singled out anymore.

Of course some people will say this is overstocked. Which might be true if I didn't keep up on water changes.

Look into adding a JD or a couple others and maybe another FM to form a pair?

Is it a male or female? How big? Pics?

my severum and blue acara are constantly 'harassing' the firemouth.
no torn fins or fierce fights.. the FM is just being chased around during meal times. :D

so perhaps another cichlid of same size and aggression would keep your firemouth busy in the 90g

every firemouth i've has was a sissy, but my friend has one that has killed a green terror his size, a chocolate bigger than him, a rainbow cichlid, 2 clown loaches and a few dither fish over the space of a year.

Oooo, i kept two fire mouths with my sds, first the bigger firemouth almost killed the slightly smaller one so i moved the smaller one to a 20 gal. Then he almost killed my sd, so i brought him back to my lfs

Firemouths are tricky because they're pretty aggressive but they really don't have the body to back it up...so if you keep them with fish that seem appropriate they'll flare, chase, harass etc, but if you try for something with a bit more muscle the FM wil still try to pick fights, and the bigger fish will beat it silly. I've had best luck with FM's keeping them with either big cichlids that aren't real killers - big enough not to be intimidated by the FM, but mellow enough not to kill them.

Is the firemouth actually harming the silver dollars? Increasing the school will make it less likely that the firemouth can hound the smaller fish to death individually, but yes, more cichlids will probably intimidate the aggressive Fm more. Something like a Jack Dempsey, Nicaraguense, Blue Acara, something like that ought to work. The silver dollars will get too big for any of those to eat, i believe.

I have a Firemouth with the same problem. It chases my Jack Dempsey, Jaguar cichlid and Pink Kisser. Im just waiting for the other 2 cichlids to get bigger and kick his ass! He doesnt bother the African knife or Jurapari which are a couple inches bigger than him. also have a pleco and blue lobster and ceacilian worm no problems
