Thinking of adding convicts and firemouth cichlids to my 75gal. It is also inhabited by a 7"+ vieja argentea. Does anyone have experience with convicts and firemouth living together? (I am trying NOT to have breeding pairs of either fish)
Look you have the right mindset in that you are not on a war path to create another hybrid which the hobby does not need. So even if they breed just let them be feeders for the fish that are in the tank. So if you desire to get both fish then I say go for it.
The firemouth is not as aggressive as you may have heard them to be. Usually they flare their gills and that's about it. The argentea will probably kill both of them as they are very pestery and nippy. Convicts with hiding spaces may be ok. But they breed like mad. Still, I'm sure the argentea will keep the population down if they do.
I have two large rock pile with nooks for them to hide. The convict has been in the tank for about 4 months and at the 1" mark lives "under the radar". I just hope with these hiding places the firemouths will be able to blend in also
