i just got a firemouth from my LFS and when i put him in my tank i noticed he was breathing really hard and fast his gills were pumping fast he is not being very active but he is no sitting on the bottom he is just sitting in a cave i figured just staying in the cave is normal but the breathing hard part is making me nervous. at first when i put him in the tank there is another cichlid that was much larger and chased it around but wasnt nipping at him i took him out and put in another tank caz im taking that one back but could he just be freaking out from the new tank or is somthing wrong. o and all my peramitars are normal just had checked before i got the fish in a 75 gallon tank NOT OVERSTOCKED at all.

ypur fish is stressed you should have took the lager fish out and rearranged the tank floated ur firemouth and let him set up his territory with the lights off "that reduces stress" than let your larger maybe not so compatible cichlid in with him... despite its name your firemouth is quiete tame... do some research its harmful to stress fish because sometimes they wont pull out of it and you will have an unhealthy skitsih fish... but next time you do a water change do that routine and see if it helps
