Hi guys,

I'm considering keeping a set-up mainly for Firemouths.... I have a 180ltr tank with external filter. First of all...

. How many Firemouths could i keep in such and tank?

. Can I plant it with real vegetation?

. which of these cichlids would fit in with Firemouths?? Kribs, Rams, Green Terror, Angels or Neets,

. Can I keep medium sized schooling Characins and if so what types?

. What is the largest recorded size for a Firemouth?

Thanks guys :)

I wouldn't keep to many fire mouths together. It's not because of the size of your tank, but that sometimes more than one of the same species of fish in a fish tank may not get along. I would suggest getting only 1 or 2 fire mouths and I would not suggest keeping them with angelfish. If I were you I would keep a fire mouth with a green terror, a salvini cichlid, or other cichlids that aren't too aggressive. Red devils and other aggressive cichlids aren't a good match. An oscar could also be a good tank mate, but they are very big and eat a ton. Mine eats more than any other fish I have owned lol, but they are compatible also if you can keep them. Message me for more help and keep me updated.

180 liters is 48 gallons witch is too small for a single oscar you chould put 1 green terror in a 48 gallon thou. you chould put 5 silver dallor and 2 firemouth if you want you can hve a krib too. I whould not put any of the smaller schooling fish with firemouth just to keep it safe but sometimes smaller fish get along with firemouth.

Here goes:

1.) I would keep 2-3 Firemouths in your tank. 1 male, 2 females.
2.) Firemouths do great in a planted tank, this is how I kept mine.
3.) Of the Cichlids you listed I would not put any of them in there. A Male convict or HRP could be a nice addition.
4.) If you are going for a planted set up, Silver Dollars are not a good choice since they love to eat plants. i would go with Swordtails. These are live bearers and can add a lot of color to your tank while acting as dithers for your Firemouths.
5.) As far as the largest recorded FM, I'm not sure but generally they do not reach their full potential in home aquaria.

If you want tank mates for your firemouth, go with convicts. Also a Salvini is aggressive, compared to a Firemouth.Only way you can keep a Salvini with that firemouth is having a cave, so that the Salvini can hide and wont be as territorial in the 48 gallon.Once they claim a cave, that is their home until they grow out of it.I have a female Salvini that hides 90% of the day, since she lost her buddy that was a 5 inch male Texas.

Thanks for all the replies so far guys... I don't want to keep anything that could damage or stress my firemouths as from experience they are pretty low in tolerence of being bullied. At the moment I have one Firemouth possibly male??? - in with two Oscars that are growing very fast but I want to move them on due to lack of space.

Yeah, moving the oscar's out is a must since they will quicklly outgrow the tank. A planted Firemouth tank is a cool way to go with maybe a convict in there as well.

you chould get silver dallor if you use fake plants or rocks.
I'm not sold on the idea of silver dollars in something less than a 55gallon. I've done them in a 55 before, but they too get larger than people think they will, especially when they are smaller than a quarter when you get them. Also they should be schooled with 5 or more of their own for the best results, and that will quickly eat up all the space in something less than a 55.
