My 10 year old daughter has caught the fishkeeping bug in a big way. She started a couple years ago with a basic 10 gallon, then last year moved up to a 29 Gallon bow, and recently has had me put together a 50 Gallon aquarium for cichlids. She's done her research and has included an oversized cannister filter, UV sterilizer, in line heater, etc. Anyway, she decided that she wanted to raise firemouths in this tank, so we purchased two pairs of firemouths about 3 weeks ago. They have the tank to themselves, other than two siamese algae eaters that joined them this past Saturday. We have noticed that the cichlids have paired off with one dominant pair and a second non dominant pair. Well, we woke up this morning to a surprise. The dominant pair have a huge number of fry swimming around their end of the tank. The parents are doing a good job of parenting, the other pair have firmly retreated to their own nest on the other side of the tank and the algae eaters are keeping their distance.

Just looking for any tips, thoughts, etc. She is adding the odd shrimp pellet which the parents seem to be grinding down for the fry. We don't have the extra tanks to remove them and raise them properly as our other tanks are all populated. Do I have to pick up a nursery tank now?

I have added a picture of the dominant pairs nesting area as well as a picture of the tank as a whole. The non dominant pair occupy the rocks at the right of the tank, and the dominant pair have taken over the rocks on the left.

Welcome to MFK☺ Congrats to your Daughter who is already becoming a great fish hobbyist at a young age. The fry are free swimming so I personally would just pulverize the pellets for the fry but still add regular for Adults.

Welcome to MFK!

Usually Fire mouth are good parents but with two pairs in the same tank it complicates things a little. If you could move one pair the other would probably raise their fry in the tank.

But, If you want to set up a nursery tank it is fairly simple and cheap to do. You can pick up a ten gallon tank pretty cheap. Wal mart usually has tens for like 12 to 15 bucks. But if you have a Local fish store ask if they have any, sometimes people just give stores tens just to get rid of them. You may find one for less than ten dollars or free. Then add a sponge filter, air pump and heater. Thats really all you need.
I like to hatch brine shrimp for my fry. But I know lots of people that just crush up flakes or pellets for the fry and that works too.

You could setup a separate aquarium for the fry by adding a sponge filter to the aquarium their in now so sponge filter can get seeded with bio-bacteria. I personally would wait until fry is about 1and 1/2 inches this will give time for sponge filter to be ready for use without issues. Also a small HOB filter could be used by just adding some media to it from the filter from the main aquarium.

Most importantly cover any filter intake with sponge or mesh bag from lfs or even a cut stocking would work ..

Yes like tlindsey said. If you do go with another tank let the sponge filter run in the original tank for about two weeks this will get the sponge populated with the proper bacteria culture you need.

Covered both inlets (the cartridge filter intake, and the power head that sends water to the Sterilizer and Inline heater) with cheesecloth as it's all that I had handy at the time.
