Firemouth Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
very slow growers. Pretty big pansys in the world of cichlids so dont put with anything too agressive... my texas chases my fire mouth around all day.

youre looking at a few months to get to the 2"-2.5" and even then they are almost half grown. I'm guessing in about 8-12 months from 1" they should be fully grown. they do get quite fat and stocky when they are mature. I just found a breeding pair of adults and got those instead. I'm not entirely sure why people think they are aggressive. they are probably one of the most aggressive Thorichthys species but you could easily keep them with geo's and other non aggressive fish in a peaceful set up.

I find they do better with fish like Uaru, Severums, Angels, geo's then they do with Parachromis, amphilophus and the more aggressive species. If you want a small fish with attitude salvini is the way to go!

The aggression in firemouths is more of a territoriality, if you provide them with an area to call their own they are very peaceful fish.

They are among the most peaceful CA cichlids, will take years to get "large". Good tankmates for other peaceful CA cichlids like rainbows, and for the laidback SA like acaras, festivum, severum, chocolate

Firemouths are not peacful in the sense that they are very territorial. Ive always kept them for years and one thing that i find constant they will pick a spot and territory and defend it and harass any fish who come near. In a large enough tank day 40+ with semi aggressive fish or cichlids this is not a problem because there will be enough space for their territory to not be crowded. Tank mates are best kept with similar sized in mind but my monster adults are holding their own against fish like oscars, texas, viejas ect. Ive seen them do well with geophagus as well.

bear in mind that chocolates are not all fun and games, my male regularly steals feeder goldfish from my gar. He is one of the most aggressive and territorial cichlids I have ever owned. which is completely out of the ordinary considering I have owned a bunch before, but just beware they can be pretty mean !
Here he is
