So, I was thinking of getting lets say 6? Firemouths' to raise and eventually house in a 210, with a nice hardscape of wood/rock structures and a shoal of SD's or Tiger barbs as dithers. I would like to hear you guy's opinion on why or why not you think this setup would work.

i think it would work out just fine. in fact in a 210 gallon i think you could do more than 6 firemouths...i'd start off with around 12 and see how they do as they grow. also, the silver dollars or tiger barbs would probably work just fine, but if you wanted to go closer to a biotope type tank you could do swordtails instead. :)

It will work for sure in a 210. It depends on what size tank you are starting off with.

Thanks man, I will look into the swordtails.

In a big tank like you describe you'll end up with several pairs vs a colony...

I figured, but I suppose the use of the term colony was a poor choice of words. Commune maybe? :)

Well I went and got 6 itty bitty bitty firemouths today they are maybe 1/3 of an inch long and they are in a 29g right now, I fugure I will move them to the 90g in a couple months when they put on a little weight and then to the 210.

I think it would work. Also, swordtails are great with firemouths.

I would looke into paisones(spelling?) too. They have a yellow throat and I think they would contrast great with the firemouths.

I went fishing at a local river today and ended up collecting some TX cichlid fry, they are a little smaller than my FM fry but they all seem to get along for now. I moved the FM's and TX into my 90 with a 1" oscar (13 fish total) so they have tons of room atm however I wonder if I will be able to keep any TX with the FM's? I plan to narrow down the TX to just one male but would he be just too agressive/big to keep with the FM's?

i think if its just a single male and he is grown up with them that it will probably work out fine especially since the firemouths will all be in pairs (unless of course you have a rogue female FM who pairs with the texas and then you will have problems)
