Firemouth color

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Firstly its only young and the best colors don't really start to show till they are 3" + Secondly the environment can play a part and if the fish is stressed it looses coloration. Check the water parameters and temperature and don't over feed. Thirdly it might be ill... check for stingy white faeces gills gasping etc.

Thanks. I bought him like that.

then he might have a problem.... is his tummy swollen? string faeces? white spots on body? gasping?

Lots of shop bought meeki are over bred and lack the colour of some wild or close to wild stock meeki.
Some wild meeki will have more colours than others depending on catch location.
For example the Rio subin meeki are very red some wild meeki show a lot of black and there is a variant known as the black meeki.
Other wild meeki that live over very pale limestone show very little colour at all.
I don't think your meeki looks particularly ill,I think it's down to genetics.

a darker substrate can help... other than that, quality food and give it time... he should get more color when he puts on some size... hard to say how much though
