A few days ago my tank inhabitant suddenly became very shy when I approached the tank and now they won'y even come to the surface to eat. I don't know what to do. Even the serpae tetras they are with won't come to the surface to eat. I know firemouths are supposed to be shy but this is rediculous. They just nervously dart around the tank when it comes time to feed. I have no clue what to do.

Yes I have kinda it was on monday.

what are the current water parameters, it sounds like something is a little off...also how long have you had these fish?

My Firemouth are far far from shy, there must be something wrong. As the others said you need to do some water tests.
Look for things like white poop, or anything visable on the fish.

The fish look healthy. I've had them for a couple of months. Regular old brown poop. The nitrite, nitrate, and amonia is in check. Nothings changed.

update: as soon as I stepped away from the tank they all came out and whre eating. Still nervously though.

Guys, this has nothing to do with water parameters. There is fish that act this way, this is a common problem. Ive had cichlids do the same and my water is fine. Tons of people post about their fish being shy/scared/skittish etc.

Either they are too new and dont know you yet, or you have done something to spook them. You have to gain their trust back. I dont really know a cure, but it takes time. I would just pull up a chair and sit with them each day for like 15 mins atleast and hopefully they will start trusting you again.

That's what I was thinking but I wasn't sure. I did rearrange thier decor myabe that scared them. I usually do it at night. No problem.

Its definetley not a water issue. You just prolly spooked them a lil bit. My fish are doing the same thing right now. After seeing the "Big Green Net" they tend to run and hide when i come to the tank. They'll get over it though. Like Pyramid said, pull up a chair and read a book to 'em or somethin'. LOL

okay thanks
