Just yesterday I purchased a Firemouth Cichlid (approx. 1") from my lfs, and I would like to put real plants in there with him.

I was planning on planting Marsilea hirsuta as a carpet in the foreground.

Do you think he would tear it all up?

hmm.. I have a firemouth with some large plants and he doesn't pay them much attention, idk if he would tear up a certain type of plant specifically though

Goodluck :P

I would definitely stay away from stem plants. I'm not sure about marsilea. I bet once its grown a full carpet he will ignore it but you can never be too sure. Save plants would be things that can attach to wood or rocks. Java fern, any moss, any anubias, etc. I know that my cichlids LOVE to rip up anything they can lift.

My firemouth has always completely ignored plants. Never kept it with anything as delicate as Marselia, but I'd say your chances of success are pretty reasonable.
