I have a firemouth that's wore out his welcome in his sa cichlids tank and is either going to the local lfs or I was thinking that I may try him out in my all male African Peacock and Hap tank ( 240 ) gal ? The fm is about 3.5 in , my African tank is pretty mellow . Any ideas on this? Thanks , The Bear

Not what I normally did and it's been years ago, but on occasion I had both severums and green terrors in hap/peacock tanks with no problems. The severums were ignored and ime green terrors can more than hold their own, in fact ime they'll boss or police a hap/peacock, tank, breaking up fights, etc.

That's just my experience-- it's one of those things you can't dogmatically say will work or won't work, but I wouldn't rule it out. A possible factor in my mind would be whether the Africans see the firemouth's shape as being similar enough to see him as a conspecific, which isn't much of a factor with sevs or GTs. It might also depend somewhat on the firemouth, whether he chooses to fit in or attempts to pick fights, etc.

I agree with neutrino, I'd try it (when I had time to sit and observe for a decent length of time). I consider the peacock haps fairly mild mannered compared to most rift lake species.
The FM might see the haps as competition (they are very similar in shape), or not even recognize them as relatives.
If you do try, I'd be interested in hearing how it worked out, either way.

I've only kept a Red Devil, Midas and FHs w/ Africans Rift lake species , and it was ok temporarily, but I wouldn't expect much long term. Usually the Africans end up finding a way to bombard even the biggest fish and slowly wear them down.

Up date. Fm went into the tank this morning and thinks he's one of the Africans. Basically doing his fish thing like he's one of them. 0 problems so far.
