Last night after work I decided to just stop by the local Petsmart even though I usually go to the Petsmart by my house so I didnt think Id see anything new. Well good thing I did cause I found this "firemouth" in a tank with 2 dead smaller convicts. Both of which i think it killed. It was not shy at all, as soon as it saw me it came to glass and showed no fear. That was until the Petsmart working came with her net to scoop it out. Lol.

Maybe the fish is still young but a couple things are making me think twice about it being a firemouth. Theres no black dot by the gill plate, even though I seen some pics of firemouths without one. The head doesnt look quite shaped like one. It doesnt have a red belly but the caudal, dorsal, anal and pelvic fins are red. It has a horizontal line without the one big dot like most firemouths. Its body is a beige/tan with darker stripes. And finally it has red eyes.

Tell me what you think. Maybe im just being crazy thinking I found a hidden treasure. Either way if its a firemouth or hybrid. Im happy cause it only cost me $2! :grinno:

Local Pet Smart by me has one of these labeled as a Firemouth too, I thought it looked like a Red Star Flowerhorn myself.

sweet. that probably explains the dead cons in its tank. im hoping shes a female. my big male green texas looks semi interested in her and my possible female blood parrot doesnt like her at all.

ill just call it a middevil (midas / red devil) for now til it gets bigger

I agree, not a firemouth, the head (among other things) is wrong for a firemouth, definitely an Amp or hybrid thereof...do I see a touch of vieja/Paratheraps? hm...
