Would I be stupid to try and keep a pair of firemouth and five/six corries in a 40B w/ 250GPH HOB and sponge?

I kept cories with a Convict before but you never know. Id be ready to move the cories just in case they get picked on by the FMs...but with enough space to run away and hide they should be fine.

I dont see a problem with keeping corys with FMs. I have kept corys & pictus cats with lots of different cichlids. As long as the cats don't fit in the cichlids mouth it's usually okay. However all fish are different & I wouldn't be surprised if a cichlid did kill a Cory. Just saying I personally haven't had a problem.

That being said you will most likely have problems with a breeding pair. Not only will your FM pair be overly aggressive protecting the eggs & fry but cat fish are one the biggest predators FM and other smaller cichlid eggs. It will be very tempting for the corys to sneek into the nest at night to try to steal the eggs.

I don't see the corys being able to defend themselves from the FM once they become enemies.

I was kinda hoping for a fish that would take care of some of the eggs, so I didn't have to cull so much. I think I might try it, I'll be taking my not-pair of angelfish to the store when I get these, so if it goes bad there is a little extra room in their tank.
Or would a BN or other sub 6" pleco be a better idea?

They will defiantly take care of some of the eggs. The only problem is they will also become relentless targets of the FM. Getting a larger pleco would probably be a better idea. They have smaller babels than cat fish but will still get beat on.
