I'm still un-decided on a tankmate for my 3" male firemouth. I've narrowed it down to one of the following:

-red tail/rainbow shark
-blue/honey/other gourami
-2 female convicts
-Blue Acara
-pictus catfish

As of now he is alone in a 29g with a school of black skirt tetras that he ignores.

I'm leaning towards the blue acara, as a lot of videos/posts that I've come across during my search show the 2 cichlids relatively peaceful with each other.

Anyone got some experience with blue acaras and firemouths, or some opinions on the others?

Hm, I thought of trying that again. I had a female in there when I first added the firemouth, but she was a lot bigger than he was. She ended up being more dominate because of size. I guess I could get a similar size or smaller so the firemouth is most dominant since they are just show and no damage will be done.

As for the blue acara, I seen a lot of owners say they were similar to the firemouth in size. Most said the wild caught can reach 7-8", but tank-raised rarely got more than 5-6".

They are usually quite a bit thicker than firemouths. I kept an adult pair in a 40 breeder two different times, and it was rather cramped for them.

I see, guess they're out of the question. I seen some really small female convicts at my LFS today, some decent sized red tail/rainbow sharks, and 3-4" gouramis. Still trying to narrow it down, as they're all pretty nice fish.

fm and blackskirts in a 40b w/ blood parrot... working out fine ... but... a 40 b is a lot more roomy .. hit petco and pick up a 40 or 55 at the $1 a gallon sale and sell the 29 for $15 on cl ... your in bizzness:popcorn:

Would if I could. Landlord doesn't want big tanks and a 29g is as high as I can go. I ended up just increasing the tetra school with some long-finned skirt tetras.
