Firemouth Tankmates

Green terror (but will outgrow your 55g), severums, parrots, tiger barbs, rainbows, red tail or rainbow sharks, blue acara
iv also read swordtails are ok, if memory serves me, they live together in the wild. But i could be wrong, this was research i did sometime ago and i never bothered buying a firemouth.... do some googling, alot of good advice
I keep my firemouths with Giand Danios, Buenos Airies Tetras, Cory Cats, a Pictus and Salvinis. If you want the Firemouths to be the doninant fish, I would not recomend the Salvini.
Oh, and my fish ate a couple of mystery snails, a CAE and a couple of sailfin mollys. I have heard of others that kept them with mollys and swordtails, but it didn't work for me YMMV.
If you end up with a breeding pair they may become too aggresive for some tankmates.If you dont have a breeding pair you could add a con or maybe a dempsey.
My goal was to try and get a breeding pair. Here is some pics. Can anyone sex these two. Someone told me I have a male and female. Any additions I make, I would like to keep it a cichlid tank. A co worker was gonna give me a Albino Oscar that's about 6", but he said she's too aggressive and will kill all my fish. 
your tank is only big enough for a oscar alone. I would go for a convict maybe. but even then you may push your luck. 55g has alot of possibilies but not so much in terms of cichlids
