Hello everyone. I have a 29 gallon fishtank, and wanted a small to medium sized cichlid species. I know that is down to either a convict pair or firemouth. As much as a convict pair does sound cool, because I could feed the fry to my Green terror, I would like a firemouth. I know that a firemouths minimum tank size is 29 gallons, but I was wondering if I could put a different type of fish in with the firemouth. I was thinking a live bearer such as mollies, swordtails, or platys. I know that in the wild firemouths live in the same waters as swordtails, and since firemouths are a more docile cichlid species, I was wondering if I could have 3-4 sword tails with a female firemouth. I know that she will be aggresive when she lays her eggs (I've learned this from my green terror attacking my pictus catfish) But my biggest concern is definitely the size of the tank. Thank you to anyone who responds.

IMHO 29 is small for firemouths. I'd got for a smaller cichlid like Honduran red point or Cryptoheros.

I agree with adamsfishes, I had male FMs reach 10", a 29 might be a growout tank, but that's about it.
I also agree a pair of HRPs or Cryptoheros nanoluteus would be much more apropos.
