firemouths?

i am thinking about buying another tank to get one or two firemouths. how big do they get i hear 5-6 inches? i want to get a 29 gallon would that be enough or would i need bigger? the only other fish in it would be a rubber nose pleco. can u put lava rock in with them or will it raise the ph too much? thanks.

I think gts can range from 8" all the way up to 12", but im not sure

Water measurements in the Thorichthys meeki habitat can be expected to show alkaline readings with pH in many cases over 8.0 and hardness levels from hard to very hard. Temperatures are higher in the ponds near Villahermosa (28°C to 32°C), lower in the rivers (25° to 28°) and still lower in the cenotes (20° to 25°), cienagas along the sea can be expected to be as warm as the ponds of the lower Grijalva river.

ok i just thought lava rock did i must have been mistaken for something else. but i am going to get a bigger tank as soon as i get a job so if the 29 gallon isnt enough then the firemouth will be moved to the bigger tank (hopefully a 180 gallon) and will be put with other cichlids.

A pair of Firemouths would do well in a 29 gallon.

The males generally get between 6-7"s, while the females grow to about 4-5"s.

A pH from 7-8.5 is acceptable, as long as it is consistant.

I would seriously consider a very find substrate, such as sand. My Firemouths LOVE excavating the sand looking for small particles of food. Plus they keep the sand loose, so there's no chance of anaerobic pockets.

A healthy full grown Firemouth is a sight to see. Their coloration is amazing!
