in that tank, mabey 2-3, some nice gravel, or better some sand, with a couple larger rocks, some nice driftwood, and mabey a hardy plant would be fine.

i realy like how they look im new to the hole fish seen so the more advise the better the 36 gallon is my old turtle tank id like to set it up amazon like

i would go with just a pair, they get up to 6 inches..and become pretty agressive just like any other cichlid when spawning, unless you want 3 females, which are not as colorful as males

there isnt much you can put with them in that sized tank..maybe a small school of emperor tetras and a few cory cats

I agree with the above mostly. Here is what i woudl do: Buy 6 juveniles from any LFS. Grow them out until the pair forms. Get rid of unpaired fish leaving just breeders. Next, go and get a 4-6 tiger barbs and a smaller species of pleco for clean up. Clown plecos fit the bill nicely.

i'd go with stad... get a couple juvis, keep the ones you like the most(1male,1female) then as for aquascaping make it a nice planted tank

black substrate really makes their colors pop some driftwood with java fern or moss a rocky cave oh and make sure the substrate isnt too large tankmates i like congo tetras cory cats and you cant go wrong with a bristlenose pleco

FMs will show a lot more of their natural behaviour with a sand substrate than gravel. I agree with the recommendation to get six juvies and wait for a pair to form. Just provide lots of aquascaping and be prepared to move the unpaired fish when the time comes. Good luck.
