I've always had penguin biowheel filters as back-up on my tanks. I really liked the idea of the BB living in the wheel and the flow seems decent.
Anyways, I ordered my first aquaclear and got it in the mail yesterday. I couldn't make up my mind as to which canister to put on my 40br, so I decided to go the HOB route. This filter is awesome! The media proportions are amazing! There is easily 2-3 times the amount of filter padding and lord knows how much more activated carbon than one finds in the 'rite size C' inserts I use in my penguin filters. And given how much water it's moving, the thing is damned near silent!
I now have the stupid urge to replace all my penguins with AC70's and AC110's. The penguins are fine filters, but its clear that the aquaclear will outperform them. Just thought I'd share. I know I like hearing members opinions on comparable filters.
