Picked up my first acrylic tank this weekend. Here's my dilema..... I need to hook a huge sump to it. What would be the best way??? I can build overflow boxes into the corners or maybe the center.....Or just put drains on the back wall..... Plans for the 240 gallon tank is Morays. The sump....probobly 200 lbs of sand 200lbs of rock. I imagine I'm going to need a significant amount of flow between the 2. The tank is no prom queen. Definetly function over form so to speek.... So I have no objections to knocking any holes anywhere I need in it. I look at it as a 240 gallon ball of clay at this point in time. Would like to hear from people that have experience with both kinds the advatages and disadvatages of each..... The way I see it overflow boxxes take up space but I guess if a plain old drain clogged it would probobly be ugly..... Any ideas to get this thing up and going would be great.......

i would put hole in the back wall with bulkheads and strainers. one on each side.

it simpler than building overflow boxes or stand pipes or whatever else you are brainstorming.

i vote just drilling and adding some bulkheads.. id also used a drilled out threaded cap as a strainer just for strength since morays can be as as gental as a bulldozer when they want to.....
reason i vote bulkheads insted of overflow boxes is that a moray cant get itself stuck in half capped hole but it can get stuck in a overflow box

Off the back would be quickest..

However if the back of the tank makes it sticks out too far from the wall for your taste, you could do bottom holes with tall pipe to make the intake a few inches from the top of the tank. Just have to make sure the pipe doesn't leak when standing still.

Good job on the tank score.

It will have H.O.B. filters on it..... So the distance away from the wall thing doesn't matter.... But at the same time the bulkheads have to stay clear of the filters.... OK... bulkheads it is...... Now can anyone point me in the direction of where to get them? Or better yet what size..... I have NOT got a pump I plan on using permenetly yet..... How much flow am I going to need? Rich?? What kinda turnover rate do I need? There will be 4 AC 110s on it plus possibly a few cannisters....Have a few fluvals and a pair of magnums that are just sitting after I get parts I'll probobly use a few of them on this.

aquacave.com is where I get mine. and size? hmm You can either go with a single 1.5" drain or two 1" drains should be good too. As for the turnover for a the eels I would go with around 5-6x since you will be using other filtration as well. I have a few pumps that would be good.. I have 2 ehiem 1260 pumps that would be good for that tank.

Also get the threaded bulkheads (On both ends) that way you wont have to glue the pipe to the bulkheads. Makes removing them easier later on.

So to be safe and acount for future upgrades the overeflow should probobly be capable of 2500 gph...... A pair of 2 inch? I plan on tossing my monos in with the eels once I get thier salinity up..... they've been in light brackish for many years. I lost everyone of my saltwater fish to ich.

^^ True that!!! Gotta love them Morays!!! Just too bad it's so tough to find them... There's still a few species I'de like to have. Just can't find them and no one here (vendorwise) can get them. Well I'll go with dual 2s then.
