Hello everyone, my name is Danny!
Well, Where to begin. I am 21, and recently purchased my second ever Aquarium, My first Aquarium of significant size. A 50 Gallon. I am interested in Tiger Red Oscar's, Electric Yellow Oscar's and Black Barred Silver Dollars, Common Silver Dollar's, and Angel Fish. Not saying that i will ever put all of them into the same tank, but that is where my interest is at.
I am stuck in a hard spot. My tank is 4 Feet wide, and about 1.5' tall. This means that i am limited to how many larger fish i can put into my tank. i know for a fact i could get away with my all time favorite's the Yellow Electric Oscar, and the Tiger Red Oscar. But that isnt enough for me, i like variety.
So, that is where Black Barred Silver Dollars, Common Silver Dollars, and Angel Fish come into play. I understand that Black Barred SD's like to be in groups of 4. Perfect because i would want at minimum, 2 Black Barred's and 2 Commons. But again i want variety, so i was thinking of mixing in a few smaller fish (maybe feed fish) and possibly a few medium fish, Angels and such.
What do you guys think?
This is my first large scaled aquarium, and i want it to be a great experience.
4' X 1.5' X 1.5' Are my tank dimensions
Aqua-Clear 110 and Aqua-Tech 30-60 Are my filters
Black Tahitian Moon Aquarium Substrate.
I have 2x Bulbs of unknown size, the fitting says 600W - 250V No idea on what size the bulbs are tho.
I am planning on a black background, or possibly a blue (Pro's / Con's, Why or Why Not's, Black Vs Blue, i need opinions!)
I am very interested in real plant life, i am looking for something that is very low maintenance, Low Light, Just simple easy, Green plantation
I am a big fan of grass. Can anyone point me in the right direction when it comes to fresh water plants that are easy for beginners? Any good threads out there that i could read up on? It would be much appreciated.. Google sucks when it comes to looking for information.
Any suggestions for tank mates with Oscar's?
Any suggestions for tank mates with Black Barred Silver Dollars?
Any suggestions on where to purchase fish that cant be bought locally?
Any simple tips that would help me along the way?
MUCH APPRECIATED!
Background
It all started when i was 10-12 years old, i wanted my own pet. I just lost my long time childhood friend Buddha, The chocolate pitbull. I couldnt have another dog because i was now in the apartment life, i quickly started wanting a cat, or a snake, or a spider of some sort. I hinted around at my mom and she blew me off. Well, while hiking one day with some friends in the woods, we came up to a river. This is where i think the turning point for me was, i caught a fish that resembled a Placo. I cant tell you exactly what this fish was but we captured it inside of a water bottle. I quickly ran back home (15 minutes away) and showed my mom that i caught a fish and i wanted to keep it. Needless to say it quickly died because i had no idea on what a filter was, no clue that fish had to stay within a certain temperature range, and had no idea how to feed it! i didnt even know what it was! My mom realized how serious i was and bought me my very first starter fish tank kit. It was a 10 gallon, everything included setup. I had 2 Angel fish that lived the longest in there, and i had a few other little tetra's and what not, and a placo. After they all died, i never picked the hobby back up, 10 years later i purchase my first 50 gallon Aquarium!
