Hey everyone, first post here and I have a few questions.

I am working on my masters in marine biology here in Florida and I found out a week or two ago that the school has a real nice outdoor freshwater aquaculture facility that is currently unused. I am converting part of the one building to a SW system for research and some other students will be using another part for FW culture.

Outside there are 4 8'x3' cylindrical tanks (1,100g each) that are open to use, plus a few raceway style tanks. The system in on flow-through from a well on campus. The water is pretty hard and has a pH of around 8, with some sulfer in the water.

I would like to keep an arowana in one of these cylindrical tanks. My main questions are can an arowana deal with a pH that high assuming proper acclimation and constant pH once acclimated?

Also which species would be best for this tank and water conditions. I really like the jardinis but I don't want to have one fish in a tank that large. If a jardini can behave with other appropriately sized fish in a tank that large, that would be great.

If not can multiple silvers be kept in that tank? Maybe 2-4 since this is an aquaculture facility and it would be neat to have some breeding.

Live food can be provided from the 3 small ponds in the facility that are full of Gambusia sp.

Thanks.

u could do some silvers, maybe 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 ur choice. that tank dimensions is great for silver aros. and a ph of 8 should be fine.

yep what he said ^^^^^^^^^^

if the arowanas are SLOWLY acclimated to the tanks PH, and if it remains constant afterwards than its fine.

a group of six would be great at first, than when they pair up after many years they can breed for you if you get rid of the other four and leave the breeding pair in the tank alone.

Good Luck

Personally I would not keep Silver aros in a pH that high, but others have done it, and I don't know if there are any long term issues with doing so.

Sounds as if you are able to use one very nice facility, but what happens to these silver aros once you are out of college? Will you still care for the fish or will they just be destroyed.

The fish won't be destroyed. The facility is going to be used mostly for the aquaculture classes and the fish will stay there in the tank or moved to a pond. If they don't want them anymore I've always wanted to dig a pond and have some arowanas.

I will be working on my masters for atleast 2.5 years and then I will most likely 95%+ be continuing on to my PhD, so there's another 4-5 years.

well if u like Jars u can try juz 1 wif a couple mebbe 4 - 5 silvers... and make sure uR silvers are bigger den uR Jar juz 2 keep the mates temper in check... the PH should be fine once the fishes are acclimated... still sounds a bit on the high side though... but u could give it a try... lastly congrats on uR acquisition of a fantastic site 4 keeping monsters...

Anyone want to recommend some sweet tankmates for 4-5 silvers? I would prefer them not to be exclusively live food eaters. It'll be easier to not have to collect food for them constantly.
