This is my first aro and I'm pretty excited about it. I've had him a couple days now, his fins are a little ragged and I understand they will recover? He has started eating blood worms but can only stand a couple mins with some attention before the fish goes into some kinda nervous mode, frantically swimming around running into the sides of the tank I hope he grows out of it. I got him in a 95 hex for now, he is approximately four to five inches so I got a little time to find a suitable permanent home. Also he has a spot on each side of the body behind the gills that have nice colors, do you guys think they will stick around into adulthood or disappear? Anyways looking forward to learning what this site has to offer and taking care of some monsters. Nice pics. Yep, his fins will grow back before you know it. He'll outgrow the nervousness. May be stating the obvious, but vary his diet a bit more. Also, you're right, you do have a LITTLE time, my silver aro went from 3" to 12" in just a couple months. Don't want to stunt its growth. Not sure about the spots.
Also good move with the floating plants.

Is it water lettuce?

The orange-blue ying yang looking spot just behind the gill fades a bit as they get older. Mine is about 9" now and I can just make out the spot. Mine has kept some really nice bright orange markings on the gill membrane and a turquoise lining on his mouth. Arowana have great subtle colors though. You'll love watching his colors evolve as he/she gets older.

My aro also has somewhat ragged fins and I'm not sure why. It may be due to how hard my water is, or maybe its that he is still kind of a spaz from time to time (especially when the lights are all out! Anybody else????). I would send a pic but my camera sucks. Congrats on the good looking aro!

By the way, arowana like a lengthy tank more than a vertical tank, so when you purchase/build his next tank, make sure its 8 to 10 ft long and he'll live a long happy life.

that's an awesome Arowana. I want to add one to the discus community that I am planning but I think they will eat almost everything in the tank...
