i have 3 jewel cichlids (1 male 2 females) and a pleco(in the process of rehoming) in a 40g

2 of the cichlids paired off and about an hour ago laid eggs on top of the flower pot.

questions:

-are they ok with the pleco in there? will it try to eat the eggs?

-should i block off the right side of the tank w/ egg crate where the eggs are? or block them off with the mom or dad?

-should i remove the pot with the eggs and place it into a separate 10g? what about the parents?

the 10g isn't set up yet, so it would be a lot easier to block it off.

thanks!! :nilly:

cool, i divided the tank... parents and fry on one side, and one jewel and pleco on the other.

wish me luck. lol

The other female will not be long for this world if she stays in the tank with the mated pair. From my experience Jewels are not polygamist. Leave the parents with the eggs. Remove the pleco. It will be killed, it will eat the eggs, or both.

lol, funny you say that because last night the male somehow got through the divider and was "swimming" with the other female. this morning he was back caring for the eggs.

eggs are still there some i'm guessing they are going to hatch.

what do i do next? should i wait until they become free swimmers? how do i feed them in the big aquarium? at what stage should i switch them to another tank? and how?

thanks!!
