ok I have been putting this off for a while now.

I make snail-o for all my inverts, gelatin, baby food, calium and vedgies, blended, mixed and frozen in to cubes ( I have a recipe of any one wants it)

so I thought why not try it for my fish?!

ok so i have been saving up for this for a little while as well as had some left over stuff in the freezer

here we go!

found two types of sea weed dried not cooked.

set it in some warm water to re hydrate ..about half of each pack

now for the fun stuff!

pile of left over con feeders..who got to big to be eaten and kissed a knife and were frozen, a sunfish who died in the out door pond, scalups, chunk of salmon, filet of tilapia, some old silver sides. a few marbled cray who grew to large, and a baggie of crushed ramshorns snails, all had been frozen and thawed for this.

BLEND! ..after a few mins and some extra water it came out rather smooth.

the sea weed was fun...kinda tough at first but i tried it hole first

fail

i ended up chopping it up in to small chunks with kitchen scissors..adding more water. It took about 3xs as long to blend as the meaty stuff...oh yeah tossed in a little peace of garlic for good measure.
DSC09732.jpg

next i got out a jar of baby food that i use for the snail-o..only for something to heat up and add the gelatin to with out cooking any of my ingredients....this one has the most calcium witch is why i have it for the sails.
DSC09736.jpg

heat for about a min...it will be HOT..add gelatin and mix until mostly lump free.
DSC09737.jpg

DSC09738.jpg

mix all together!! ( note.. always use bigger bowels than you think you will need. )

DSC09735.jpg

i placed it in a pan where it is about an inch deep..it is currently in the freezer covered in wax paper,
DSC09739.jpg

I intend to let it freeze over night, pull it out and cut into chunks that will be grated, using a cheese grater for my smaller fish....lets see how it comes out!

looks delicious, bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

no no cooking! :P that is the point of the gel food ^_^ (for me) ...trying it out on the fish tonight

Which fish were the convict feeders & Silversides intended for.. I thought you kept mainly bettas, inverts and goldfish?

Sent from my Toaster

Looking good. I am thinking aboit trying something similar for my rays. I would love your snail-o recipe as well.

the cons and silversides mostly are for my sculpin she is over 7 inches and used to love eating fish..now she just wants pellets!! i have 3 betts , some shirmp and snails, one gold fish :P but i also keep 4 types of rainbows, some gudgeon, tons of killifish, an obscure type of large danio, and other types of danio, an African River cichlid, shell dwellers...er im sure there are some im missing..but i have allot of tanks...and lots of types of fish!...and most of the cons are fed as wigglers to everyone even the bettas.

you should!!! and here it is ^^

this is borrowed from another member on this site or AC cant remember any more, and I modified it a bit

snail jello:

1.5 packets knox gelatin (plain unflavoured) (most recipes call for one packet, but i found that wasn't quite enough)
about 10-12 tums, crushed up into a fine powder (this is your calcium source for good shell growth)..I started using liquid calcium pills....but you can use any source of calcium you like.
one small jar of baby food (i used butternut squash)
ground up pellets or flake food (optional)
frozen and thawed (or blanched) strawberries, spinach, zucchini, canned unsalted green beans, leftover butternut squash (optional but the snails love to find bits of fresh stuff in the food^_^ ) all mashed to a pulp

microwave the baby food in a bowl for about 1 minute
stir in knox gelatin, making sure to break up any lumps until it's all mixed thoroughly
stir in powdered tums
stir in optional fish food
stir in optional veggies

spoon into ice cube trays, filling each cube about half to 2/3's. put into fridge or freezer to set.
pop out of ice cube trays and put into ziploc. put ziploc into freezer. snail jello will keep a long time this way.

when you go to feed the snail jello, just drop one of the frozen cubes into your tank.

I did that too but just got too lazy after awhile.

I put in krill, shrimp no shells, tilapia, massivore, algae tablets and a bit of garlic. My fish love it. The next experiment will be Mazuri gel food.

I tried to stay away from prepared foods when making this! and this was just a test run, next time there will be more ingredients.

Nishime kombu is the expensive stuff. Dashi kombu has to be a lot cheaper. If you soak the kombu in hot water, it gets a little softer. There are other kinds of seaweed that are not as tough as nishime kombu such as Wakame. Wakame would be a lot easier to blend up. Nishime kombu is so tough, it's tied into knots and cooked in a Japanese stew called "nishime". Have you thought of using agar agar instead of gelatin? It's solid at room temp. Agar agar is another seaweed derivative. It's the stuff used as the media in petri dishes in laboratories....
