Can pond Armor simply be appied to plywood or is it necessary to use concrete sheets like VLDesign?

Pond Armor can be applied directly to plywood, but concrete backer board is recommended because the PA will stick better to it and it offers some additional protection from potential flexing in your support structure. If using directly on plywood make sure you have a very strong structure (ie. external bracing to strengthen the corners and prevent any possible flexing). Also, if applying directly to plywood you should start with a light coating of Pond Armor thinned with denatured alcohol, to get better penetration into the wood.

This info is based on emails I've exchanged with Butch at Pond Armor.

wow, 2 gallons of pond liner really went a long way!

im shocked at how expensive it was though!
