After much thought me and the GF decided to add a bird to our reptilian horde of pets, and while we were going to get a Conure, we decided to go with a Paraakeet for now as we learn how to care for one and then move up later. anyone got one, what are some good ways to interact with her.

from Petco, no breeders around here

parakeet are usually very friendly, they learn fast too. Mine will give me kisses, he steps up on my finger to come in and out of the cage, and he takes treats from my hand. I have a sun conure as well and they are actually bonded together. When I have the conure on my shoulder the parakeet flies over to us to sit with my conure. They even share a cage. The biggest thing with getting them to step up in and out of the cage is space. I use to have a parakeet in a tiny parakeet cage and he hated me reaching in and trying tog et him out but once I got a bigger cage with a large door, he wasn't as afraid and my parakeet is so attached to my sun conure that he learned to step up and come out if I had the conure out first. now they both step up to go in and out of their cage whenever i want them to. Be careful of that string under him, they can swollow it and get it bound in them. Also, is he always ruffed up like that or was he just making himself look bigger? I notice the biggest thing with training them is if their cage is in sight they will likely keep trying to fly to it because thats their security. If you want them to bond to you and sit on your hand, finger, or shoulder then you need to take them away from their cage. Usually once you have them away you can work with them to step up from finger to finger and they usually aren't aggressive one bit. Also, I would get him a play stand to play on. It helps keep him off furniture and even yourself because they go to the bathroom like crazy but it gives them a place to be outside of their cage. My birds are on their playstand all day long as long as I'm home and they won't leave it

She is always ruffled up like that, is that normal? I have also already taught her to step up, I put my finger in front of the door to her cage and say up, and 9 out of 10 times she just hops up

no, thats not normal and most times not good either. Ruffed feathers is usually a sign of illness. How long have you had him? yeah most parakeets will step up and they are great little companions

Just one day, what could be wrong with her you think. She is really active for a few hours and playing and chirping then she sleeps, wakes up and does it over again before sleeping some more. She has a really good appeitate, but is picky it seems. first bird, so any advice will help

it is actually a budgie pet stores call them parakeets so people know what their talking about i have two...this one reminds me of my dead one kiwi...good luck

A budgie and a parakeet are the same thing. Bdugie just comes from the scientific name while parakeet is the common name, kind of like with most fish! I also am pretty sure it is a boy. I would just keep an eye on him. as long as he is active , eating, and not lethargic then he may be just fine. I'm not trying to worry you or anything I just know keeping their feather ruffled can be a bad sign. Usually if a bird is ill then won't show their illness until its far too late because in the wild they are easy prey if they show any signs of weakness s they hide illnesses well. My parakeet is a picky eater too sometimes. Being around my conure and watching him eat all kind of things has helped him try more things like fruits and veggies and even some people snacks but I wouldn't worry too much about the diet as long as you're offering pellets along with the seeds and fresh fruits and veggies

how can you tell what sex it is, the pet store stated it was a female but what do they know lol
