Drove two hours to buy three 6" widebar silver dollars friday night. I splurged and bought three 1.5" payara along with the widebars. Got home at 1 am and dropped the three payara in my 40 gallon breeder with some growouts. When I woke up Saturday morning, one of the payara was dead. No problem, they are pretty fragile, probably stressed out on the roadtrip. Sunday morning everybody is fine. Sunday evening, both of the payara was covered with ich. Rookie mistake.

I removed all the decorations out of the tank. Raised the temp to 86, added salt at 2tsp/gallon. Also added a few extra airstones. I'm planning on keeping the lights off for a week and not feeding.

Is there anything that I missed? How often should I do water changes? Thanks.

One of the stages of ich is a dormant stage laying and developing in the substrate. The more you vacuum and get rid of that water, because it is sucking up dormant cysts, the better. Just make sure you keep the salt concentration up at 3ppt (parts per thousand).

Would you recommend daily wc?

I do daily partial water changes with or without ich, but I don't always vacuum, with signs of ich I vacuum daily if using salt as edication. If another medication such as malachite green, every other day.

Get yourself some Seachem Paraguard it is the best and safest....treat the tank heavily with it and you'll knock it on its butt.

Do I need to toss the sponge filter, or will the high temp and salt kill the ich that made its way to the sponge?

Do I use the paraguard with the salt and high temps? Or just the meds by itself?
