well I just got my first bichir from a lfs it was labeled as a dinosaur eel so from my reading here I am sure it is the senegalus. I am so excited I have wanted one for a long time and never got one. any suggestions for a first time keeper? what kind of foods do yours love? and anything I should avoid feeding or anything a first timer might not know would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

:welcome: bichir newbie. Get your bichir off feeders and start getting your bichir to take pellets and chopped up shrimps will make feeding easier for you in the future. Bichir prefer a tank with a few hiding spots and are slow to adjust to tank lighting. Bichirs like to jump out of the water so be sure the tank is well covered. Bichirs are very hardy fish and can tolerate different water parameters. If you have any other questions, please ask or read up on this sub-forum sticky.

will these guys come to the surface to feed or do I need sinking pellets for him? I cant believe the personality on this guy he is great.

I have a feeling your going to be glad you got one. They are like an oscar they kind of grow on you after a while. One of my favorite fish. My bichir likes bloodworms, flakes, pellets, and even red worms from the garden. Not a picky eater at all, very low maintance.

You should be fine no need for sinking pellets. They will come to the top to feed.

I have cichlids in my tank, that hog all the floating pellets, so I use the sinkers as well.

mine have only feed from the bottom, but a lot of people's on here eat at all levels.

i have the same prob w/ my O as ewurm.

mine will eat anything.
including veggies.
if you dont have fish that gobble up food too fast.
your sen will learn to go to the top for food.

Welcome to the wonderful world of polypterids! Mine eat at the surface but it takes a while for them to learn to take food from the top (learning involves starving..). If you have a tiny one I'd stick to sinking pellet foods and frozen foods
