At one point I was considering building a large Plywood tank, but I saw ads for a couple of aquariums I would consider buying.

The first is a 180 Gallon Glass aquarium drilled with a center overflow for $295. The second is a 325 Gallon Acrylic for $450. I have not seen either in person yet, but the larger tank is the one I want.

The plan is to house Angelfish, Denison Barbs, and other community fish. Now for my question...

What kind of filtration should I be looking. I assume a sump for the 325 and a couple of canisters for the 180, but looking for advice. More than anything I am looking to see how much more it will cost to set up the bigger tank.

Thanks

Think I’d consider those tanks over the plywood any day. Cost wise it’ll be a bit more. More time consumed building it. Tanks are cheap. Especially if they’re in good shape. Yes, sump for the 325. Sump for the 180 or 2 canisters.

You could also use a sump for a 180 and not limited to a canister. Cost will depend the size and you could find another smaller tank for a sump or an actual premade sump.

The filtration cost for material and pump will vary but it depends on what you use for the su.mp.

My 180 has a sump and I prefer it way over canisters. I bought my 180 gal with a super nice stand and seamless sump for 800 dollars so you have a decent deal.

Fill that sump with 50 dollars of dollar tree pot scrubbies and toss in a bunch of old and dirty filter media with some ammonia and youl be cycled in 2 to 3 weeks if all goes well.
