Hello guys and girls. I am a retired Bronx NY fireman who is new to this hobby and in need of some guidance. I plan on building a 72"x18"x18" glass frameless or braceless tank. Does anyone know if this is possible as far as safety for the occupants and my house. Will it blow apart. I am ready to order the materials if it has been successfully been done before. I need advice on the glass thickness and the sealants and any other advice needed to start and complete the project.
Regards

hello and welcome to mfk

there is a diy section on here that I am sure if you post your questions there you will get lots of help.

good luck and you should make a thread showing your progress with pictures. would be cool to see

Thank you very much SumoNinja, there must be a 1000 member's in this club and only u took the time to respond. I searched the DYI and came up empty. Do yourself a favor and find a better brotherhood. I think my inquire would have been a very basic question for an experienced aquarium hobbyist. Once again ,Thank You

To be honest start your own thread and go from there and may people on here build something to keep cost down on custom dimensions. And the building of an aquarium at a standard size is not usually done. But to answer your question yes it can be done with thicker than normal glass. Good luck and don't be quick to judge many people are busy that actually help.

Hey man Welcome to MFK, nice to see someone else from da Bronx on here as we're few and far between. As far as people not responding it's because this section isn't really frequented that often and essentially depending on when you initially post you might've hit a slow browsing time and people simply missed it. You would've been better served asking your DIY question in the DIY section only because it's a more frequently visited section and would have probably gotten more responses due to your threads higher visibility. Now I know you might be thinking but my thread got a lot of views and no responses so I don't think it was visibility that stopped people from responding. A threads view count goes up no matter who views it, even unregistered users who can't answer the thread viewing the thread makes the count go up. With that said this is a section frequented most often by unregistered users and new users hence why you might have a high view count and so little responses.

As far as your originally query DIY is no simple subject and even advanced aquarists can struggle with it especially tank builds and the calculations for tolerances etc. So your question isn't a basic question it's actually a fairly advanced one that not many of us can answer. With that said I'm no expert on DIY but using logic I can make an educated guess about your query. Dial92 suggested that he believed it could be done while I'm more skeptical(I'll also remind you again I'm guessing using logical extrapolation while Dial92 may actually be more experienced and therefore could be correct). Thicker Glass might stop or lessen the bowing associated with the weight of large amounts of water but the fact would remain that all the weight of the water is being held in by less support without the typical braces of larger tanks. So I'd be hesitant relying on less support then a typical tank that size uses as I imagine Aquarium company's do all they can to lessen the cost of their tanks to create a higher profit margin while maintaining structural integrity and with all their experience and know how, they use braces at that size so my guess is at that size bracing is a necessity. Just my opinion.

Again Welcome to MFK and hopefully you'll stick around and find out how helpful this site can be and not let this poor initial first impression cheat you of a great experience.

^^ I'm from the Bronx lol. You are right though not many members from the Bronx on here. I believe what you want to research are euro style tanks and bracing. You might be able do it with double the thickness of standard tank glass and use a 3" glass strips around the top and bottom on the inside of the tanks rim. I had a acrylic vat that was made like that. It's 72"x36"x14"tall.

You may also want to consider that a lot of people aren't retired and have jobs and family life to take care of, so they don't have the time to get on the site 24/7.

Sure, I'm checking out this post, but since I have no experience in this subject I'm not going to chime in with advice(s). Or would you rather I pretend to be experienced and give you advices I've googled and pretend that its my own expertise just to gain admiration?

Anyway, welcome and like Dial92 stated, "don't be so quick to judge"

I never knew that man, very cool as most I've met on here from the Bronx aren't avid posters. Nice ta know I gotta nudda MFK Bronx Bruddha. :D So then your location Waterbury is Waterbury ave? If so your right around the corner from me, well about 2 miles or so around the corner.

By the way BronxBombero I apologize as I'm not trying to derail your thread as well as for my prior long winded post, which you'll see if you stick around is a vice of mine. I do hope it helps you understand why you may have gotten so few responses until now though.
